Escape to Romance: 10 Dreamy Road Trips from Chicago for Couples

Sometimes, romance means candlelit dinners, champagne and a hotel room with a ridiculously large bathtub. And sometimes, it means throwing an overnight bag into the boot, grabbing two coffees and telling Chicago, “We'll see you Monday.”
For me, there is something irresistibly romantic about a road trip for two. No airport security. No frantic sprint to a gate. No deciding who gets the middle seat. Just the two of you, a good playlist, an unnecessarily elaborate snack selection and an open road.

And if you're based in Chicago, you're rather spoiled for choice.

Within a few hours' drive, you can swap skyscrapers for vineyard-covered hills, city noise for forest trails, and your usual Saturday-night routine for boutique hotels, riverside dinners and charming little towns that look suspiciously like film sets.

So, if you're searching for the best romantic road trips from Chicago for couples, consider this your excuse to start the engine. These are 10 dreamy Illinois road trips I'd put at the top of my couples' getaway list.

1. Galena: The ultimate romantic getaway from Chicago

Perfect for: Boutique hotels, wine tasting, historic streets and pretending you're starring in a very expensive rom-com.

If you only choose one destination for a romantic weekend in Illinois, make it Galena.

There is something almost unfairly charming about this historic town in north-western Illinois. Brick-lined streets, beautifully preserved buildings, independent boutiques, restaurants, rolling countryside… honestly, Galena seems to know exactly what couples want.

Start on Historic Main Street and allow yourself to wander without a plan. Browse the shops, stop for coffee, pick up something you absolutely don't need and then find somewhere lovely for lunch.

For the afternoon, explore the surrounding countryside or settle in for a wine-tasting experience. Illinois' official tourism guidance highlights romantic Galena experiences including wine tasting, river activities, scenic drives and the Galena River Trail.

Then comes the important part: book somewhere gorgeous for the night.

This is not the weekend for a budget hotel beside a petrol station. Choose a romantic inn, boutique property or somewhere with a little character.

Luxury-romance tip: Pack one outfit that makes you both feel fabulous. Yes, even if you're "only going to dinner".

Ideal trip: 2-3 days.

2. Starved Rock & Utica: Romance, but make it outdoorsy

Perfect for: Hiking couples, waterfall chasers and anyone who thinks muddy boots can still be sexy.

If your perfect date involves getting outside rather than sitting across from each other in a candlelit restaurant, head towards Starved Rock.

The area's sandstone canyons, wooded trails and waterfalls make it one of the most dramatic places for a weekend getaway in Illinois. Add the restaurants, wineries and small-town charm around Utica and Ottawa, and you've got plenty to fill a couple of days.

There is one important caveat for 2026: trail improvement work means some areas of Starved Rock currently have temporary closures. Check the Illinois Department of Natural Resources' latest information before setting off rather than trusting an old Pinterest itinerary.

My ideal day: Hike in the morning, have a long lunch afterwards and spend the afternoon doing absolutely nothing productive. Honestly, that's luxury.

Luxury-romance tip: Book a cosy room nearby rather than driving back to Chicago immediately. You came for an escape. Commit to the escape!

Ideal trip: 1-2 nights.

3. Geneva & St Charles: Your chic little escape when you can't take Friday off

Perfect for: Last-minute couples' getaways, independent shops, pretty streets and excellent food.

Not every romantic road trip from Chicago needs to become a four-day expedition.

Sometimes you want to leave after breakfast, be somewhere charming before lunch and still have enough time to be back before Monday ruins everything.

Enter Geneva and St Charles.

Set along the Fox River, these neighbouring towns are packed with boutiques, cafés, restaurants and historic architecture. They're wonderfully walkable, which means you can park the car and forget about it for a while.

And I strongly recommend doing exactly that: spend the afternoon browsing shops, lingering over coffee and taking a riverside stroll. Then dress up and go somewhere lovely for dinner.

Illinois' official road-trip itineraries feature Geneva and St Charles as part of routes connecting Galena with Chicago.

Luxury-romance tip: Book one night. A spontaneous overnight stay somehow makes an ordinary weekend feel considerably more glamorous.

Ideal trip: 1-2 days.

4. Oregon & the Rock River: For discovering somewhere wonderfully under the radar

Perfect for: Scenic drives, quiet countryside and couples who'd rather discover somewhere than follow the crowds.

There's something special about finding a destination that doesn't feel as though the entire internet has already been there.

Oregon, Illinois, and the surrounding Rock River area are perfect for that kind of escape.
Take the scenic route, explore historic communities such as Grand Detour and Dixon, and follow sections of the Lincoln Highway. The journey can form part of a larger road trip between Chicago and Galena, with Illinois tourism itineraries highlighting several stops along the way.

The secret here is not to over-plan: find a café, take the scenic detour. Stop because the view looks pretty. Have lunch somewhere you hadn't researched beforehand. That's the good stuff.

Luxury-romance tip: Bring a proper picnic rather than a packet of crisps you've found at the last petrol station. A wicker basket earns you serious romance points.

Ideal trip: 1-2 days.

5. The Great River Road to Grafton: For couples who believe the journey is part of the holiday

Perfect for: Scenic drives, Mississippi River views and couples who want to slow right down.

Some road trips are about getting somewhere. The Great River Road is about making getting somewhere ridiculously beautiful.

Illinois' section of the route follows the Mississippi and stretches for roughly 550 miles between Galena and Cairo. Obviously, you don't need to drive the entire thing unless you have an impressive amount of annual leave and absolutely no responsibilities.

Instead, choose a section and explore at your own pace. Grafton is a lovely option for couples who want river views, outdoor adventures and a relaxed small-town atmosphere.

And please don't race through it! Pull over, take photographs, find somewhere for lunch. Watch the river. Make a coffee stop just because you can.

Luxury-romance tip: Plan your driving around sunset. A beautiful road + golden-hour light + your favourite person = basically cheating at romance.

Ideal trip: 2-3 days.

6. Shawnee National Forest: For couples who want a proper escape

Perfect for: Cabins, hiking, wine, dramatic scenery and switching off from civilisation. This is the one for couples who look at a luxury hotel and think, “Lovely, but do they have a forest?”

Shawnee National Forest is considerably farther from Chicago than the other destinations on this list, but that's exactly why it works so well as a longer romantic getaway.

The forest encompasses more than 280,000 acres and offers hundreds of miles of hiking trails.

Make time for Garden of the Gods, where striking sandstone formations provide spectacular views. You can also explore Giant City State Park, Cave-in-Rock and the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail.

This is where I'd book a beautiful cabin, bring something delicious to cook, pour a glass of wine and spend an evening doing absolutely nothing.

No emails, no meetings, no “What should we do next?” Just you two.

Luxury-romance tip: Choose accommodation with a fireplace, hot tub or spectacular view. Ideally all three.

Ideal trip: 3-4 days.

7. Matthiessen State Park & Ottawa: For the couple who wants nature without the fuss

Perfect for: Waterfalls, forest walks and a more relaxed alternative to a packed itinerary. Matthiessen State Park is a brilliant option if you want the beauty of the Illinois River Valley without making your entire weekend about one attraction.
You'll find wooded trails, waterfalls, canyons and distinctive rock formations, while nearby Ottawa and Utica give you plenty of options for food and a comfortable overnight stay.

Waterfalls can be particularly impressive after rainfall, so check current conditions before heading out.

My favourite thing about this sort of trip? You can make it as active or lazy as you like. Hike in the morning, lunch somewhere delicious, browse a few shops. Nap (yes, the nap is part of the itinerary).

Luxury-romance tip: Don't schedule more than two major activities in one day. You're on a romantic getaway, not competing on The Amazing Race.

Ideal trip: 1-2 nights.

8. Illinois Route 66: For couples who like their romance with a side of nostalgia

Perfect for: Vintage diners, quirky roadside attractions, photographs and shamelessly cheesy fun.

Let's be clear: not every romantic road trip needs to involve a five-star hotel. Sometimes you need a milkshake. Maybe a retro diner. Possibly a giant roadside attraction.

And definitely a photograph that you will both pretend is embarrassing but secretly treasure forever.

Illinois is the birthplace of Route 66, with around 301 miles of the historic road running from Chicago towards East St Louis.

Choose a section and make a weekend of it. Explore historic communities, vintage attractions, murals and classic roadside stops.

And don't worry about looking sophisticated. The best road trips are allowed to be gloriously cheesy!

Luxury-romance tip: Upgrade the experience with a fabulous dinner at the end of the day. Vintage roadside fun by day, cocktails by night.

Ideal trip: 1-3 days.

9. Illinois River Road: For a slow, scenic couples' getaway

Perfect for: River views, quiet roads and couples who don't believe every minute needs to be scheduled.

The Illinois River Road follows the river between Ottawa and Havana for around 150 miles, passing natural areas and historic attractions along the way.

It's the kind of route where I'd resist the urge to create a colour-coded itinerary: pick a few stops, leave plenty of time between them, stop whenever something catches your eye. And, most importantly, don't spend the entire drive staring at your phones. The point is to actually be there.

Luxury-romance tip: Pack a proper picnic and find somewhere scenic to eat. Add sparkling water, strawberries and an absurdly nice blanket if you're feeling extra.

Ideal trip: 1-2 nights.

10. Chicago to Galena via the scenic route: The ultimate romantic road trip

Perfect for: Couples who want to turn a destination into an entire experience. Galena is wonderful. But you know what's even better? Making the journey part of the adventure.

Rather than blasting straight from Chicago to Galena, build your route around a few carefully chosen stops. Explore sections of the Lincoln Highway, visit Rock River communities and make time for smaller towns along the way.

Illinois' official road-trip itineraries highlight routes connecting Galena, Oregon, Grand Detour, Dixon, Geneva, St Charles and Chicago.

Give yourselves two or three days and resist the urge to cram everything in. Because there's a particular kind of romance in having nowhere else to be.

Luxury-romance tip: Book your favourite accommodation for the final night, when you've earned a glass of wine and a very long lie-in.

Ideal trip: 2-3 days.

A few road-trip rules for couples who like their romance drama-free

Before you put the car into gear, let's talk about the less glamorous side of a romantic road trip.

Check the weather, check traffic, check road conditions and opening times. Yes, it's boring. No, you won't regret it.

This is particularly important in winter, when Illinois weather can turn a picturesque road trip into a rather less glamorous exercise in survival.

For state parks and attractions, check official websites before leaving. Closures, construction, seasonal opening hours and trail conditions can change - as the current work at Starved Rock demonstrates.

I'd also download offline maps for rural areas, make sure your phone is charged and give the car a quick once-over before leaving.

And please, for the sake of your relationship, agree on the navigation system before you're on the motorway. There are some arguments that no amount of romantic accommodation can repair.

One practical thing I'd do before every road trip

Nobody puts “possibly getting into a car accident” on their romantic weekend itinerary. Obviously.

But being prepared for an emergency is part of travelling responsibly. If you're involved in a collision, get somewhere safe, contact emergency services when appropriate and document the accident and any relevant information. If injuries, significant damage or questions about insurance and liability arise, having the details of a qualified legal professional saved before you travel can save you from searching for help while you're already stressed. Couples travelling from Chicago may want to keep the details of a Chicago car accident attorney handy. This is general information rather than legal advice, and the appropriate response will depend on the circumstances of any particular accident.

So, which romantic road trip from Chicago will you take?

Here's my theory about romantic road trips: the destination matters. But the little moments matter more.

It's the ridiculous song you both sing at full volume, the coffee stop you didn't plan. The roadside attraction that absolutely did not deserve a detour but got one anyway. The restaurant you stumble across and end up talking in for three hours. The hotel room where you order breakfast in bed because, frankly, you deserve it.

Illinois may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think romantic escape, but perhaps that's part of the charm. You don't need a flight to find somewhere beautiful.

You don't need an international itinerary. And you certainly don't need to spend three months planning it. Sometimes, all you need is a full tank, a free weekend and someone you really like sitting in the passenger seat.
